Devils
The first song on the single is 'Devils'. I play harmonium and later added a kettledrum Mowing Sean left in my workshop. Daniel Johnston is singing the refrain with me.
The song is about frustating devils in your head who are telling you that your're not good enough. Negative voices obstructing your ambition. The way to deal with these devils is to watch TV. They fall asleep because it's boring. When they're sleeping you got a chance to be real.
It was written after our first tour with Daniel Johnston. I guess that's where the devil symbol came from. Because of the movie and the stories about Daniel I was afraid he was gonna hit me with a baseball bat or something. He appeared to be a really nice guy. Later I visited him at his house in Texas to record him singing along with this song. (Dutch story here) It's a weird song he said. After drinking gallons of root beer I went to a hotel in Austin and listened to the song. It worked out great.
Secrets are like gasoline
The song on the B-side is called 'Secrets are like gasoline' . I picked up the electric guitar since 12 years. Mowing Sean on drums and Erwin Smitskamp plays bass. Together with Erwin I worked out the harmonium part. Karin Camerik does a little backing vocal. She got a great voice and sings much more on 'When the phone doesn't ring it's me', wich will be released on vinyl later this year.
This song is about hurting people with secrets.
I don't know the secret anymore but I talked about it to someone who thought he kept this to himself and no-one knew about it. When he realized people knew obout this, he literally turned white and fell from the barstool.
Knowing a secret about someone gives you power. This kind of knowledge can destroy friendships. Pretending you know a secret about someone gives you power too. It's the wrong kind of power but it makes the world go round like a big washing machine.
